Strephon (Kaplan-) Williams and I met first at Olney Friends Boarding School in Barnesville, Ohio, USA, in September 1952, he in his last year there, I in my first. We later encountered one another at various points in Los Angeles, California, in 1956-1962. We both owed a great deal to the teachings of Warren Stetzel at Olney and to Gerald Heard in LA. I visited him several times at Berkeley, California, the last in 1971. In 1967 my first wife Judy and I named our son for him in honor of our great friendship with him and appreciation of his wisdom and sincerity. I was out of contact with him from 1972 when I migrated to Spain, where I have lived ever since, until around five years ago when, through internet research by my first wife, I rediscovered his whereabouts and his lifelong work as psychologist and especially as dreamworker. When he was diagnosed with lung cancer last march, he let me know, and I feel very fortunate to have been able to visit him briefly on two occasions last June.
Strephon Williams was an extraordinary member of our species, a rare seeker who actually did find much Truth. Furthermore, he made a great and effective effort to pass it on to the rest of us. His death is turning out to be one of the most painful that I have experienced in my 71 years. Now he has gone from our world. He has lived in my heart for 57 years and he will go on living there, at least as long as I live.

Strephon was an early supporter of my efforts to bring grassroots dreamwork to the Internet. We saw in one another a pioneering spark that can light the way for generations of dreamers. The Electric Dreams community drew upon Strephon’s work and notions about developing dreamwork across non-hierarchical trajectories that took the dream itself as the lead, and is much indebted to him.
I began bringing other dreamworkers on the Internet in the mid 1990’s, most of which had been influenced by Strephon, and eventually brought the organization he started, intially called the Dream Explorers, now the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD). His relations with IASD had it’s ups and downs, and he was very supportive of my efforts when they seemed to be faltering with the organization, particularly in the area of online dreamwork.
In the mid and late 1990’s the organization began accepted people from all areas of dream research and more dream sharing online was possible. The original mission statement Strephon had hammered out with his fellow Explorers began to actualize. His influence continues to be felt at IASD and will be an enduring influence on dream research and education.
Thank you Strephon, for your lifetime of support of dreams and dreamers around the world, both virtual and non-virtual.

Wow. Seems like an end of an era. I’m glad I that did subscribe in time to at least say a goodbye to Mr. Williams. Last I saw him in .. 2003 he seemed robust and vital then. Hard to believe that he’s gone.
I met him sometime in the 80’s in Berkeley ,Caifornia, when he was running the Jungian-Senoi Institute. I got alittle involved in the institute, participated in a class and dream groups at his home. I got alot of “Dream couseling” by one of his workers there “Terran Harcourt Dailey” and I still owe her money. I was kind of a kid at that time, but I really appreciated Mr. Williams for telling me get involved in that. I thought a organztion developed to discover the secrets behind dreams and there role in our lives just fanastic.
“Kiddish”
translation of Jewish Prayer for the dead, in honor of Stephon Kaplan Williams, of blessed memory:
Let us make the great Name known and holy.
Let the Name fill the world, formed by its will.
May the earth be its realm.
May it fill our lives and days.
May it spread through all of Israel
swiftly and soon, and let us say, Amen.
May the great Name be blessed and blessed
for as long as the universe lasts.
Let the Name be praised and glorified.
Let the Name become potent, lifted up, raised on high..
Let the Name be graced in beauty,
praised in song, ascend in joy.
The Name, the Name of the Holy, blessed be the Name.
All prayers, all songs of praise and hymns of glory,
all words that we utter in this world.
So let us chant our praise, then cease and say, Amen.
with love, prayers and vision as you travel through the worlds returning to the Eternal Source of all
