Review – Man On Fire 2004

Issues: ... redeeming oneself … redemption … good and evil . personal ethics …

These things are great about this film: the acting, directing, pacing, the writing of the human background personal story as motivation to go with the action events of criminals and good guys at work at the edge between good and evil that seems to exist in every society.

  • I you want to be educated to life as it is this film teaches you how to find the edge between good and evil in life, even in your own life, and exist there, and deal with life issues there.
  1. What makes a person shift over to doing evil to serve themselves first in life?
  2. What makes a person shift over to doing good to redeem themselves in life?

I don’t know if anyone is born good in this life, or born evil.

  1. Do childhood and young adult circumstances make us tend towards good or evil in this life?
  2. Do we also have moral choice as young adults to go down one path and not another?
  3. What defines the good? What defines evil? We mean in real terms.

What is exceptional about this film, its story, and its acting is that the issues articulated above are truly dramatized and made central in the film.

You want to watch a good thriller, lives portrayed on screen that are more dramatic, more life and death, more dangerous, maybe more rewarding than your own life at this time, then you could get much from this film of adventure and testing, as well as experience the humanity of ones personal issues in terms of evil and good.

  • Evil is when we go after what we determine what is best for us regardless who gets hurt and killed along the way.
  • Good is when we redeem the evil we have previously done by opposing evil in ourselves and others to the best of our ability and circumstances.

It’s the story of a professional American governmental assassin who is overcome by the evil of all his acts of killing ‘designated harmful people’ and so becomes an alcoholic and a bodyguard when a friend challenges him to at least take the bodyguard job as he maybe gets his life back together.

Man On Fire is also about the kidnapped ten-year-old girl who is strong and perceptive but also not equipped for adult life yet and so is caught up in the dangerous evil of others and also her relationship with the good in the bodyguard whom, by being her confident and caring self, helps her depressed bodyguard also begin to see himself as able to be different despite his terrible past of being a professional assassin.

Others play their significant parts in this film but their roles, well-played as they are, tend to amplify each person’s struggle to deal with the good and evil in themselves and in their lives.

Don’t forget, you can feel that you have pretty well cleaned up your soul so you don’t do evil unconsciously, but how do you handle the evil you unconsciously do to others, and even more unclear, the evil that some others do to you?

Yes, it takes courage and smarts to deal with others’ evil you come in contact with. The stronger you have dealt with your own evil inside, and your acting evil out in the past, maybe still the present, then the stronger you will be in dealing with evil visited your way by others at you or at people you know intimately.

Of course we cannot simply deal with all the evil, the destructiveness and power greed that many people even seem to love to manifest.

You pick and choose where you can, but at least this movie sharpens are moral senses and we see what it takes to live as a moral person in an immoral world, if you agree with this perspective on things.

I do …
