Original Daily Wisdom – Nothing-Everything

“Nothing is everything sometimes.”

A Story

A sage once visited an old man lying out on his last bed and who obviously now had little to live for. The old, shriveled, lying man, motioned for the sage to come forward. The sage did as asked and bent over so the old man could say something into his ear.

“What do you see here?” whispered the old man.

“I don’t see much,” replied the sage, smiling.

The old man motioned again for the ear of the sage and whispered, “What you see here is a lifetime of accomplishments. I have helped many people in my life and only hurt a few. Now look at me. I am Nothing!” This last was said with great effort.

“Nothing is everything, sometimes,” said the sage. “While you still have consciousness, meditate on that.”

The flat-on-his-back old man started to beckon as he had before but then thought better of it and angrily waved the sage away. The old man felt his anger. It felt good. Maybe it would hasten his death?
